The Castaud-Maurins were pioneers as individual private growers together with the Leydiers at Domaine de Durban. They own 25 hectares, of which 15 hectares are dedicated to Muscat which includes some 30% Muscat Noir.
They produce delicious red wines and their son Romain is making a name for these to rival the Muscat de Beaumes de Venise, with a blend of 35% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, 5% Grenache Blanc and 55% Grenache. We are delighted to add the Beaumes de Venise Rouge and Muscat Sec to our list.
The grapes are entirely handpicked, and the wine is tank fermented with a yield of no more than 30 hl/ha. The wine has a fine delicate character of almonds and apricots, and the use of black Muscat gives it a lovely orange tint in the glass. Their superb ‘Hommage’ à Monsieur Castaud is a sublime solera aged Muscat de Beaumes de Venise – deep, black honey, and it is delicious!
